Bonsai as Fine Art

For the first time in Asheville there were ten days of related bonsai events, including an indoor bonsai exhibit at Blue Spiral 1 and associated events at the NC Arboretum.

The exhibition at Blue Spiral 1 included 20 bonsai creations by professional bonsai artists and members of the Blue Ridge Bonsai Society. 

Participating bonsai artists included: Bjorn Bjorholm, Daniel Coffey, John Geanangel, Arthur Joura, and Brad Russell.

The bonsai were displayed alongside paintings and other works from Blue Spiral 1 artists as part of its “Beyond the Horizon” show.  

 

Related Events:
 

  • Opening Reception: Friday, June 2, 5:00 - 8:00 pm: The public is invited.

  • On Saturday, June 3 at 2 pm, internationally-recognized bonsai artist Bjorn Bjorholm demonstrated "Transforming Plant Material into Fine Art."

  • The bonsai shown were rotated after the first week of the exhibit and replaced by others in the second week, making two trips to the gallery well worth the effort!.

  • Continuous bonsai videos were shown featuring Arthur Joura, the Bonsai Curator of the NC Arboretum and Bjorn Bjorholm, Bonsai artist and educator,

Gates are open 8 am - 9 pm daily. (There is a gate fee if you are not a member of the Arboretum.)
The Bonsai Garden is open 9 am - 5 pm daily

The North Carolina Arboretum

 

On Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11, Authur Joura, the Bonsai Curator, led tours of the Bonsai Garden describing the history of the bonsai trees, forests, and landscapes on display. 

The following events took place in the Education Center:
 

  • Saturday, June 10, 11:00 am. Bonsai styling demonstration by internationally recognized bonsai artist Bjorn Bjorholm.

  • Saturday, June 10, 3:00 - 5:00 pm: Live and silent auctions of bonsai and bonsai-related items. (The proceeds benefitted the bonsai program at the NC Arboretum.)

  • Bonsai Pottery Invitational Exhibit 

 

  • Bonsai Exhibit: Featuring bonsai creations of the Blue Ridge Bonsai Society members.   

 

  • Educational videos featuring Bjorn Bjorholm and Arthur Jura.
